You’ve got awesome products, but do search engines show them organically to your target customers?

To figure out what type of collection pages search engines optimize in collection page results, we searched for a long-tail purchase-intent keyword (wide-leg golf trousers women) on Google UK.

The top 2 category page results giving Amazon and Adidas a run for their money were Shopify stores 🫨

Here’s what they did right to outperform the giants:

  • Images included: Every collection page featured contained an image (white background, product placed centrally)

  • Keywords matter: Every collection page featured had a description that included related/exact keywords. For this query, however, no store targeted the exact keyword. According to Google, each of these pages had variations of the words wide, leg, golf, trousers, and women.

  • Now things get juicy. The top-performing sites both had their Google Business Profiles completed to the letter. Amazon and Adidas had no addresses or phone numbers on their profiles. Bonus points for LoveGolfClothes (Position 1) which, according to Google, was indexed over 10 years ago.

    Makes a strong case for building on expired domains AND completing the Business Profile section.

5 Steps For An Effective Collection Page Revamp

  1. Step 1: Set the stage. Complete your business profile. If you do nothing else, make sure you do this.

  2. Step 2: Organize. Open up Google Search Console to find your poor-performing collection pages. Target these first.

  3. Step 3: Keywords. Use a tool like Ahrefs to find low-competition versions of your store’s main keywords. Note these.

  4. Step 4: Put words where they matters. Change collection page titles to your identified keywords where necessary and write descriptions + meta descriptions for your collection pages. Speed things up with an ecommerce prompter + ChatGPT

  5. Step 5: Images. Add a simple image representing the collection on a plain, white background. images. Nothing too crazy.
