EverydayHealth is looking for brand dermatologists to weigh in on which shampoo ingredients to avoid because they are harmful to hair and/or overall health. Here are the questions:

  • It's said that alcohol as an ingredient in shampoo can dry out hair, but is that true of all types of alcohol? For example, I understand "fatty alcohols" may be beneficial. Is that true?

  • Which of the following shampoo ingredients may be harmful to overall health and should be avoided: alcohol, coal tar, diethanolamine, polyethylene glycols, resorcinol, selenium sulfide, silicones, synthetic fragrances, benzene, triclosan, formaldehyde, parabens, pthalates, sulfates?

  • There's concern that some ingredients used in medicated shampoos may be carcinogenic or disrupt hormones. In particular, coal tar (used for scalp psoriasis) and resorcinol (used for dandruff and scalp psoriasis). Does this mean these ingredients are unsafe for people with scalp psoriasis or dandruff? Or that people should use shampoos containing these ingredients sparingly?

  • As selenium sulfide (used in medicated shampoos to treat dandruff-related itching and flaking) can irritate the scalp and lead to hair loss if used too frequently, what's a safe frequency?

  • Can synthetic fragrances used in shampoos be harmful to overall health? If so, how? Do these potential health concerns warrant avoiding hair products that contain synthetic fragrances? How can you tell if a shampoo contains synthetic fragrances before purchasing?

  • What is your best advice for trimming brows at home?

  • What is your best advice for achieving the look with makeup rather than committing to a longer-lasting solution like trimming? What products and steps are necessary to get the look this way?

Heads up: From January 2025, Meta has changed to how it handles ads for health and wellness brands. If you advertise in this category, you will probably see a drop in your advertising performance as you will no longer be able to share key event data with Meta.

Read the entire post here to see what you need to do next if you’re affected (thanks to Yiqi Wu, ex-Meta engineer and founder of Aimerce).

Casual News Now is seeking patio furniture retailers for state of the industry stories

QUERY: All,

I am working on a series of stories about the retail side of the patio furniture industry for Casual News Now, which is a trade publication; and we'd love to include your store.

If you sell patio furniture - whether brick and mortar, online, or as a design studio that sells to the trade, I am interested in talking with you. We're looking to find out how sales are going, all over the country.

That's it. No proprietary questions. No cost or obligation and no salesman will call.

Please take a look at the questions below and please answer in an email back to me, OR I can do a phone interview, (takes about 20 minutes.) Please let me know your thoughts.

Here are the questions:

Tell me how your business began. Did you begin it and if so, when? Or did you purchase it from another owner? How long has it been in business? How many locations do you have?

What is going to be most important for retailers in 2025? Merchandising? Product assortment? Lead times?

What are some of the challenges you've faced recently? How have you overcome them?

Are you predicting a slowdown this season? How do you plan to deal with it if it does come?

What is working for you right now in terms of marketing? (digital, in-store, omnichannel, custom order, new vendors, etc.). What are you doing differently in this area? Have you implemented any new programs or sales tactics recently?

How do you decide on manufacturers to carry in your store?

How do you set yourself apart from the competitors in your area?

What do you think full-line furniture stores getting into outdoor will mean for the industry as a whole? Is it a good thing? Is too much competition bad?

How do you compete with online retailers?

What advice would you give struggling casual retailers today?

Please let me know your thoughts. And thanks in advance!

Please respond directly to Marc via his personal email.
